Sports Day

A beautiful evening for our sports day

Memories of school sports days long ago will have filled some of our members with delight, while others shrunk with remembered dread! Not so for the Bombshell's Sports Day, ours was fun and laid back, very laid back!

We held our meeting on the field by the Village Centre. The evening was still hot, so the appearance of an electric fan caused some confusion and a lot of laughs, but all was soon revealed... keep reading!

Yet again, our committee had come up trumps and supplied equipment for three sports: skittles, darts and rounders.

The more energetic members embarked on a game of rounders, though as a concession to the high temperatures and slightly older legs only three bases were used rather than the traditional four. The triangular rounders was a great success and at least two matches were enjoyed, with victories for both teams.

Unfortunately the skittles match was abandoned due to uneven ground, but you can't say we didn't give it a good go!

We weren't trying to keep cool, the dartboard is actually mounted on the fan!

The final activity revealed the purpose of the electric fan as the support for the board for the sticky darts. Ever resourceful, the oche was a faded blue line that had once been part Of a football pitch!

We all had a couple of practice throws before starting the competition in earnest, there were variable results, but ultimately one winner. The top three scorers all received a tube of hand-cream, and most importantly a sense of achievement.

Other July events included the usual book clubs discussions of the latest book 'Weyward' by Emilia Hart. The selection for August is 'The Vanishing Half' by Brit Bennett.

During July Lorena had arranged a coffee morning for us at Newbridge Garden Centre. Lots Of us were able to get there and we all had plenty to say!

Some members accepted the invitation from the Afternoon WI in the village and joined them to listen to a very interesting talk on the Flower Market in the UK and how so many of the blooms are now home grown rather than being imported from the Dutch Flower Markets and further afield.

As always, July was a fun and interesting month, leaving us all looking forward to August and summer delights — but wouldn't it be nice if it rained?
