August's meeting (back by popular demand) was quiz night. Quiz night is always a great way to mix things up a bit as we all have to divide into teams of roughly the same size, although we are not too fussy if there are some slightly bigger teams than others, as it's only a bit of fun. I always like to team up with a different group of ladies and get to know someone new.
In my opinion, one of the best things about quiz night is that we all get chance to have a glass of wine and some nibbles whilst we are wracking our brains for the correct answers... I have no doubt that for some of us it improves our performance no end!
First thing's first, we all chose team names, amongst others there was 'Gordon's Girls' (after the gin apparently) and the slightly more attractively named 'Four Belles' and the rather amusing 'Spare Parts'. There were a few other teams, but my memory fails me, please let me know if I've left your team name out.
The Quiz, hosted by our President Rowena was split up into rounds. Our first task was to identify the names of films from a list of quotes... some were very easy and some not so, but among those we had to identify were 'It's a Wonderful Life', 'Stand By Me' and 'Braveheart' so a complete mixture of genres for all film lovers of all ages. It's amazing what will pop up in your mind if you dig deep enough and confer with your team mates. I know nothing about film, but was surprised to be able to identify quite a few of the quotes.
Rounds of 10 questions each followed on different subjects: General Knowledge, Food and Drink, more Film questions and a History Round. For a bit of fun, for those of you who weren't there here are a few questions for you, the answers will be at the end of the blog. Good luck!
1. Which Yan Martel novel won the Booker Prize in 2002?

A quick update on other WI matters always occurs at the beginning of our meetings. At this meeting we discussed the proposed calendar for next year, the committee have been very busy listening to our members about what they have particularly enjoyed at our previous meetings and what they would like to do in the future. We have got some exciting things in the pipeline, this is not 100% confirmed, but it will give you an idea of what you may be able to expect in 2020: Jan - Quantum Meditation, Feb - Gin Tasting, Mar - Kick Boxing or Self Defence, Apr - Recycling and Up-cycling, May - Resolutions with Quiz, June - Life in Colour, Jul - Bald Explorer, Sept - Fire at Uppark House, Oct - AGM and social, Nov - Christmas Craft, Dec - Christmas Party.
Our two most popular sub-groups are Wine Club and Book Club. In August Wine Club met at Joan's home and blind tasted 4 wines: 2 white Pinot Gris one from New Zealand and one from West Sussex, and 2 red Malbecs which were from France and Argentina. In September Wine club travelled a few doors down to Viv's house where we sampled 5 wines: 2 rosés and 3 whites, all wines were from England, in fact just up the road in Dorking. Whilst all the wines were delicious, 2 came out joint favourite: Flint Valley, an oaky dry wine and Surrey Gold a fruity medium dry number... I'm off to Denbies!
Book Club's current read is Crisis by Frank Gardner an exciting page turner... if you are quick you still have time to read it as we don't meet until 24 September to discuss it.
So how did you get on with the quiz questions, here are the answers:
1. The Life Of Pi
2. Cow Pie
3. Poland
4. Sweet Potato
5. Mickey Rourke
6. Nobody
7. Lancaster
8. Crimean War
Our next meeting is going to be a pampering meeting with our very own Bombshell Claire hosting, Claire runs Claire's Beauty' based in Broadbridge Heath. In this meeting Claire will be talking about how little we think about the ingredients in the products we put on our skin, and how easily we could be using skincare and make up products containing toxic chemicals. She will talk about alternative, kinder products and teaching us how to do a mini facial on ourselves. You will need to bring a few things from home to make this possible but Claire will be providing the products we will be using.
Please bring the following:
